The dust slowly settles after the most ambitious and massive tournament the BAR community has enjoyed so far. The first time in the history, in May 2021, we have held a tourney of Beyond All Reason that would test such a wide scope of strategic expertise. From 1v1 duels, through small and big team games to a final massive free-for-all deathmatch, the competitors fiercely fought for the title of BAR grandmaster. There could be only one winner, who would master all the skills that BAR PvP includes .
This was a seeded 16 player invitational only tournament with the first 12 spots belonging to the top finishers of the Alpha Championship Cup #1 and community nominations. The ultimate player roster consisted of some of the greatest names in the BAR competitive scene. Both veterans and upcoming stars took part in the competition. We have started with the following list:
Zow, [teh]Teddy, PRO_rANDY, Shoxee, HDuckDuck, skynet, Derpiederp2, Raghna, Zecrus, JohannesH, GovernorTouche, Jazcash, Evericc, MasterBel2, SayNya, trololowka
In the first round our participants faced each-other in a single elimination mini-tournament on the 1v1 classic Red Comet map. Winning each round in this stage granted 8 points, so each player was able to acquire 32 points by winning all rounds. This stage was dominated by Raghna, followed up by Johannes and GovernorTouche sharing the third spot with Shox:
The replays of these stage fights can be downloaded here.
In the second round the participants teamed up for a big 8v8 battle on a pretty unorthodox and novel map at the time - RaghnaRock. This game was a massive source of memes nad crazy moments due to the fact that at the time none of the player really knew how to approach such a map. It included many various lanes, parts accessible only via air, naval gameplay and classic narrow battlefields with chokepoints. Such a setup provided with a perfect test of an underappreciated RTS skill which is adaptability. The game was absolutely golden, we recommend looking up the replay for it :)
This round was won by the east team consisting of: Raghna, Zecrus, DerpieDerp, rANDY, DuckDuck, Zow, SayNya, Zkynet granting each of these players 12 point.
The third round was a 2v2 single elimination Bo3 mini-tournament to be played from a pool of 2v2 maps. The initial map was randomly selected, and losing team picked the subsequent maps. This part of the tourney was taken quite seriously as the players had the chance to prepare some juicy tactics beforehand, knowing with which participants they are going to be partnered. And it shows! We have witnessed a real show of tactical prowess, with underdogs totally dominating the audience favourites by leveraging the power of coordinated 2v2 strategies such as lab sharing or commander drops. Many impressive games in this stage, you can find their replays here.
After a bloody struggle, the winner were revealed to be ShoX and rAndy, although many other teams managed to cash in on this stage, earning some points. Each won round granted 8 points that amounted to the maximum total of 24 possible points for winning all tof them.
In the penultimate round the players were split into 4 teams (assigned randomly) to take part in a massive 4v4v4v4 team free-for-all game. This was an another occasion on which a pretty unorthodox map was used. This time much better known to the veterans in our community though - Green Fields. Totally deprived of metal spots, players on this map are forced to play conservatively and leverage the exponential wind economy to the maximum before being able to deal any considerable damage. This time the victory was taken by the east team - Zecrus, Zow, Teddy and DuckDuck granting them 15 points each.
Subsequent teams got 10 and 5 points here:

In the last round a 16 Player FFA was be played on the absolute FFA classic map - Throne Acidic. Positions were seeded from the current standings in the tournament, with the leaders starting on top, the runners-up on the lower level, and so on.
Points wee distributed such that 32 were for 1st place finish, 30 points for 2nd, etc. This stage was unanimously won by Drone ("PRO_Raghna" who was a substitution for Raghna who dropped from the competition by that point), followed by Skynet, Teddy and Zow. The game was very interesting because of the scoring rules. There was more emphasis on surviving for as long as possible than to strive for the win, because the runner-ups were very highly valued. Check the replay here.
The winner of the Grand Prix is decided by the most points. The winner can baskin the glory of mastery over BAR and dominating the rest of the field, and takes home all the bragging rights.
In this edition of the Grand Prix the whole glory goes to, the one and only Zow, who managed to collect the highest amount of points in subsequent rounds. Despite the troubles in the first round he did amazing in all other stages of the tourney, little-by-little gathering the points and securing the win, with 69 in the bank. Congratulations to Grandmaster Zow and the runner-ups - Teddy and rANDY!

After the dust has settled we look back at this event with a lot of great memories. Pulling this off was a giant achievement of the organisers, with most of the credits going to Dubdhara, who put together this peculiar format and made sure everything runs smoothly over the weeks of competition. We have also gathered a lot of feedback from the players and spectators about the event that will help us tremendously in organising later editions of the Grand Prix. Stay tuned for the future tourneys and keep being awesome! :)
